I was surprised to see Sam show up at my office again. I thought I’d made myself very clear after our late-night hookup. He could hardly ignore me turning his own argument against him as far as my father went. Not to mention, inappropriate was a lot more applicable in that case — in my office, at a job I’d sworn to succeed at.

After saying all that, despite my body still purring from his touch, I’d figured he would back off. I definitely didn’t expect him to turn up for lunch. There he’d been though, standing in my doorway and giving me a look that made me a little weak in the knees. Good thing I’d been sitting down.

The attraction between us thrummed in the air, but so far, he’d kept things professional. Maybe he really did only want to talk about the case. He had good, genuine questions, at least. I shouldn’t have been surprised by that. After all, Sam was a consummate businessman. The businessman I most respected.

“So, you’ve found out Wilson withheld access to this employee,” he continued, once Nick shut the door. “Are you looking for other areas in which he’s denied full transparency?”

I re-focused on Sam as he lounged opposite me, his muscular form relaxed despite the high-stakes conversation. His arm was draped over the back of the chair like he owned it. I wanted to unbutton that starched shirt over his powerful chest and lick my way down his body.

I looked down again, busied myself pulling one of Ronny’s papers out of the stack she’d given me on Sam’s case. I needed to ignore that feeling, and any others like it. This attraction was a dead end, I told myself sternly. For Lola’s sake, if not my own, I had to do everything I could to ignore the way Sam stirred my blood.

“It’s hard to prove that Wilson purposely withheld access to this employee right now,” I said, carefully modulating my voice to be at its most professional. “But, I think it’s very likely we’ll be able to track him down. If so, we don’t need to prove that Wilson tried to hide him — his testimony in court will be damning enough.”

“What if Wilson paid him off?” Sam seemed skeptical. “You think people don’t lie in court?”

I skewered him with a look, raising my eyebrow.

“Of course, I’m aware people lie in court,” I replied, smoothly despite my mild annoyance. That kind of question from another client would never have bothered me. It was just my sensitivity to Sam, wanting him to respect my expertise. As always.

“Sorry, that was more a rhetorical question,” said Sam, surprising me with the apology. “I want to know your strategy if he does lie.”

“We’re tracking Wilson’s finances — and Runnel’s — and demanding documentation of all transactions he’s made in the period in question.” I graced him with a more genuine smile, appreciating the way he’d back off from his patronizing stance.

“I see.” The wheels were turning in Sam’s head, which made me smile a little wider.
